“Hey! We’re home!” Dani called as he banged through the front door and deposited his suitcase in the hallway. He was followed by Nigel, who winced as he bent over to set his duffle bag down.

“Hey, sweetie!” Kaeden bounded out of the kitchen and caught Dani in a big hug.

“Hi Kaeden. This is a surprise,” Dani said as he returned his friend’s affections. He didn’t miss that the Asian was wearing sleep clothes.

While Kaeden was giving Nigel a quick hug, Dani looked at Sean, who had followed the femme out of the kitchen. Sean smiled at him, but there was a hint of sorrow in his eyes.

This isn’t what it looks like … or maybe it was, but it didn’t go well, Dani thought.

Nigel wasn’t quite as observant as Dani. “Kaeden, you spent the night!” he said. Not noticing that Dani was trying to get his attention, he turned to Sean and said, “You horn dog! Seducing this sweet young thing here,” he teased.

An awkward silence descended.

“It’s great to see you, Kae. Are you getting out now?” Dani asked.

Kaeden nodded, grateful for the distraction. He was afraid to look at Sean. He knew the expression on the Irishman’s face would be heartbreaking. I need to get out of here, he thought.

“I’ve got to get this fucking shirt off.” Nigel carefully pulled his T-shirt over his head. “Fuck, I never should have gotten them pierced when I actually had to wear clothes the next day.”

“Oiy, lad! What have you done?” Sean stared at Nigel’s nipples, amazed. Each was adorned with a small silver ring, the nipples red and swollen around the new piercings.

“Oooh!” Kaeden squealed. “That’s so cool.” He was about to say that he had always intended to do the same some day, when he remembered the condition of his own nipples. His left one had been so torn up, they’d had to reconstruct it, and although the doctor had done a fair job, it was heavily scarred. His right nipple bore evidence of abuse as well. His face paled as he remembered how much it had hurt when Mark had bitten him hard enough to draw blood. Suddenly feeling dizzy, he abruptly sat down on the couch.

Sean was immediately at his side, a comforting hand on his shoulder. Kaeden took some shuddering breaths as he looked at his feet. He couldn’t bear to look at Nigel’s painful-looking areolas.

Dani sat next to him on the couch and took his hand. “What have you been up to?” Dani asked. He guessed the reason for Kaeden’s distress and wanted to help take his mind off it.

“Not much. Mostly just working,” Kaeden answered quietly. He hadn’t felt like going out at all—he saw no point in it. “I visited Abe in the hospital a couple of times.”

“He’s doing a lot better now,” Dani said. “He’s been home a week. Ty said he still has drainage tubes, but they’ll take them out soon.”

“That whole thing was so scary.”

“Yes. Poor Ty. I can’t … I can’t imagine how devastated I’d be if something happened to Nigel.
